President-elect Donald Trump has selected Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, as his next pick for U.S. attorney general.
Trump selected Bondi after Florida Republican Matt Gaetz removed himself as the nominee on Thursday.
The big picture: Bondi, an official with the America First Policy Institute, worked as one of Trump’s lawyers during his first impeachment trial.
What they’re saying: Trump highlighted Bondi’s prior experience as a prosecutor, where she was tough on violent criminals and focused on stopping drug trafficking and reducing the impact of fentanyl overdose deaths.
- “Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families,” Trump said in a statement. “Then, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs, and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl Overdose Deaths, which have destroyed many families across our Country. She did such an incredible job, that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first Term – We saved many lives!”
