General Motors is laying off about 1000 workers worldwide to reduce costs and optimize for speed and efficiency.
General Motors notified the employees on Friday.
What they’re saying: “We need to optimize for speed and excellence,” General Motors said in a statement. “This includes operating with efficiency, ensuring we have the right team structure and focusing on our top priorities.”
The big picture: The layoffs mainly affect white-collar employees, with the largest group at the technical center in the Detroit suburb of Warren, Michigan.
- GM’s Chief Financial Officer, Paul Jacobson, stated that the company is on track to achieve its goal of cutting $2 billion in fixed costs by the end of the year.
Flashback: Last April, about 5000 GM white-collar workers took the company’s buyout offers to avoid layoffs.
