GM lays off around 1,000 workers

Most of the affected employees are white collar workers, building on buyouts from earlier in the year.

General Motors is laying off about 1000 workers worldwide to reduce costs and optimize for speed and efficiency.

General Motors notified the employees on Friday.

What they’re saying: “We need to optimize for speed and excellence,” General Motors said in a statement. “This includes operating with efficiency, ensuring we have the right team structure and focusing on our top priorities.”

The big picture: The layoffs mainly affect white-collar employees, with the largest group at the technical center in the Detroit suburb of Warren, Michigan.

  • GM’s Chief Financial Officer, Paul Jacobson, stated that the company is on track to achieve its goal of cutting $2 billion in fixed costs by the end of the year.

Flashback: Last April, about 5000 GM white-collar workers took the company’s buyout offers to avoid layoffs.
