Trump taps Stefanik to be UN Ambassador

The New York Republican will vacate her seat in the House to head to the UN.

President-elect Donald Trump has selected Rep. Elise Stefanik (R–New York) to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, citing her as a strong America First fighter and his loyal ally.

Stefanik, 40, is currently serving as the House Republican Conference Chair and has been one of Trump’s most trusted allies in the House.

The big picture: Despite her limited foreign policy experience, Stefanik’s appointment underscores Trump’s preference for loyalty over extensive diplomatic experience.

  • Stefanik, known for her transformation from a more moderate conservative voice to a staunch pro-Trump figure, has been vocal about Israel and called for a reassessment of U.S. funding for the United Nations.

State of play: Her departure for the United Nations will impact the House’s Republican majority but is located in a Republican stronghold where the party is likely to retain the seat in the upcoming special election.

What they’re saying: “Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump said in a statement.
