Trump selects Mike Huckabee to be Israel ambassador

The former Arkansas governor turned down the position during Trump’s first term in office.

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to be the ambassador to Israel.

Huckabee is known for being a staunch defender of Israel.

The big picture: The selection reflects Trump’s promise to align U.S. foreign policy more closely with Israel’s interests against Iran-backed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.

What they’re saying: Trump praised Huckabee’s history as a public servant, governor, and faith leader, emphasizing his love for Israel and its people as well as their reciprocal admiration for him.

  • “Mike has been a great public servant, Governor, and Leader in Faith for many years,” Trump said in a statement. “He loves Israel, and the people of Israel, and likewise, the people of Israel love him. Mike will work tirelessly to bring about Peace in the Middle East!”
