Washington Post to not make presidential endorsement

The paper reported that owner Jeff Bezos blocked any endorsements for the 2024 presidential election.

Jeff Bezos, the billionaire owner of The Washington Post, personally decided to kill an endorsement of Vice President Harris for president that the newspaper’s editorial board had drafted.

The newspaper reported the decision on Friday.

The big picture: The Post had drafted an endorsement of Kamala Harris that was supposed to be published before the election, but the decision not to publish it was made by Bezos.

  • Post publisher, Will Lewis, mentioned that they anticipated backlash for the decision and clarified that it was not meant as an endorsement of one candidate or a condemnation of another, but rather consistent with the values The Post has always stood for.
  • This move by Bezos was widely criticized, with several Post staffers and outside observers attributing the decision to Bezos and Lewis.

Driving the news: The Washington Post has a history of endorsing presidential candidates in every election for more than 30 years.
