Florida launches criminal investigation into Trump assassination attempt

Ron DeSantis is ordering law enforcement to conduct a state-level investigation into the suspect.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that Florida law enforcement will conduct a criminal investigation into the latest assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.

The state-level probe will complement the federal investigation concerning Ryan Wesley Routh, who faces federal firearms offenses charges.

The big picture: Florida prosecutors plan to seek the most severe charges available under state law, possibly including attempted murder.

  • Despite the federal investigation being in its early stages, the Justice Department prosecutors are considering additional serious charges and are gathering evidence, including interviewing the suspect’s friends, family and colleagues.

Driving the news: Routh, 58, was apprehended after authorities discovered a gun in the shrubbery near the golf course where Trump was playing.

  • Routh had camped outside the golf course with a rifle and food, waiting for the former president, who was never in his line of sight.
  • Routh did not discharge any shots and fled the scene after a Secret Service agent noticed him and fired warning shots. The suspect was detained in a neighboring county following the attempted incident.
