Valley Children’s is getting into the commercial and housing development business.
The pediatric hospital, which has faced intense public scrutiny over how much it pays its executives, plans to develop a sprawling campus around its current location in Madera County, featuring housing, retail, recreation space, and a hotel.
The big picture: The new development, which is called The Hill, was announced on a website that Valley Children’s recently launched.
- According to the website, The Hill will be a 443-acre campus that “blends functionality, sustainability and compassion, enhancing the overall experience and quality of life for our region.”
- Renderings on the website show that the campus will surround the hospital between Children’s Blvd. and Highway 41.
- Overall, the campus will have 1.2 million square-feet of mixed use space and 1 million square-feet of healthcare and medical offices.
Go deeper: There are plans to build 348 residential units on the campus, including townhomes and apartments ranging from studios to three bedrooms.
- Valley Children’s is promising to bring in over 50 retail stores in a “village environment” that will be adjacent to a grocery store and other essentials.
- A recreational area called The Yard will offer entertainment venues, green spaces, trails, exercise stations and other spaces for respite and rejuvenation. That includes 14 miles of walking trails.
- The hospital will also build a hotel in the heart of the campus that will have 173 rooms, pool areas and spaces for conferences and events.
What they’re saying: “The Hill’s five thriving districts will serve as an economic catalyst for the region, bringing choice and new amenities to the community,” the website reads. “By enhancing the campus with purpose-built retail spaces, hospitality, housing and entertainment options we enrich the experience for the staff, patients, families and community.”
