Fresno State suspends Sigma Chi fraternity over Cinco De Mayo incidents

The university suspended Sigma Chi Fraternity through Feb. 3, 2020 due to incidents stemming from a fraternity event on Cinco De Mayo.

Fresno State announced that the Sigma Chi Fraternity has been suspended through Feb. 3, 2020 due to incidents stemming from a fraternity event on Cinco De Mayo this year.

The university’s Athletics Department has also stepped in, as student-athletes are alleged to be involved in the event.

The university said Sigma Chi’s suspension was the result of underage drinking, physical assaults and noise violations from the fraternity’s May 5 event.

In a release Friday, Fresno State said the franternity is eligible to regain recognition from the university if it completes a number of conditions, including a risk-management program.

The fraternity will be barred to serve alcohol at its events until May 25, 2020.

Details of students involved in the incidents is protected under Federal education privacy laws.

In its statement, the university said one fraternity member sustained injuries, but that it was “unable to substantiate findings against any individuals due to lack of sufficient reliable evidence.”

“We expect our students to be responsible and comply with University policies while ensuring the safety of other students,” said Dr. Frank Lamas, vice president of the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Fresno State. “We hope our students — future leaders of our communities — will learn, grow and develop from this situation.”

After completing an investigation, Fresno State Police submitted its report to the university Dean of Students office and the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office.

The Sun has reached out to the District Attorney’s office for comment about any potential charges.
