Tennis star Coco Gauff, the reigning U.S. Open champion, will be the female flag bearer for the U.S. Olympic team at opening ceremony.
She will join NBA star LeBron James as a flag bearer, making her the first tennis athlete to carry the U.S. flag during the opening ceremony.
The big picture: Despite being selected for the Tokyo Games three years ago, she had to miss out due to testing positive for COVID-19.
- Gauff is a Grand Slam title winner in singles and doubles, having won her first major championship at the U.S. Open last September and her first Grand Slam doubles trophy at the French Open in June.
- She is seeded No. 2 in singles and No. 1 in women’s doubles along with her partner Jessica Pegula.
- The Paris Olympics matches will be played on the same clay courts at Roland Garros where the French Open takes place.
