Report: Harris has support of over half of needed delegates

According to reports, Vice President Kamala Harris is well on her way to receiving the needed support from Democratic delegates.

Vice President Kamala Harris has garnered support from more than half of the Democratic delegates needed to secure her party’s nomination for the presidency.

Further, Harris set a new fundraising record by raising $81 million in the first 24 hours after announcing her candidacy.

Driving the news: Top Democratic leaders, including governors and party officials, have backed Harris in their efforts to defeat Republican Donald Trump.

  • Following Joe Biden’s announcement to step aside from the race, Harris received endorsements from a range of prominent figures, such as Govs. Wes Moore, Gretchen Whitmer, J.B. Pritzker, and Andy Beshear, as well as support from House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi.

The big picture: According to a report from the Associated Press, Harris has received the support of over 1,200 pledged delegates.

  • That’s a majority of the 1,976 delegates needed at the Democratic National Convention.
  • Harris inherited Biden’s political operation and a substantial war chest, standing at nearly $96 million by the end of June, with an additional $81 million raised in the first 24 hours post-endorsement.
