Winston, a 52-year-old western lowland Silverback gorilla – one of the oldest male gorillas in captivity in the world – passed away at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance announced Winston’s passing on Saturday, stating that he was euthanized due to complications from worsening age-related conditions.
The big picture: Winston had been receiving significant medical treatments for heart disease, degenerative joint disease and kidney disease, with efforts made since 2017 to protect him from heart disease due to his age.
- During his time at the Safari Park since 1984, Winston had nine offspring and had adopted two unrelated male gorillas, displaying uncommon behavior for silverbacks.
What they’re saying: The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said Winston was admired for his quiet strength as the longtime leader of the gorilla troop in the Safari Park.
- “Winston’s legacy includes pivotal contributions to gorilla conservation and advancements in wildlife health science,” the alliance said in a statement. “He will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance encourages everyone to share their condolences and support for Winston’s dedicated wildlife care and health team, staff, volunteers, Alliance members and guests, who are deeply affected by this loss.”
