Oakland airport renaming approved by Board of Port Commissioners

The unanimous vote came despite a lawsuit by neighboring San Francisco over trademark infringement.

Oakland’s airport name change is now official.

The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners voted 7-0 to change the name of Oakland’s airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.

The big picture: The name change takes effect immediately with the vote, as the Port of Oakland oversees the airport.

Driving the news: Changing the name is intended to improve the airport’s visibility and attract more passengers by emphasizing its location in the Bay Area near San Francisco.

  • San Francisco has filed a lawsuit against Oakland over the name change, arguing that it infringes on the trademark for San Francisco International Airport.
  • The Port of Oakland has responded to the lawsuit by seeking a Declaratory Relief Action to resolve the trademark infringement claims.
