Federal officials are launching an investigation at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after one flight was ordered to cross a runway where another flight was already starting its takeoff.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Friday that it will conduct an investigation into the incident.
The big picture: The incident occurred around 7:41 a.m. on Thursday, with a JetBlue flight beginning its takeoff roll on runway 4, while an air traffic controller instructed a Southwest Airlines flight to cross the same runway.
- FlightAware data shows that Southwest Airlines Flight 2937, headed to Orlando, Florida, took off at 7:47 a.m., while JetBlue flight 1554, bound for Boston, aborted takeoff due to another aircraft trying to cross the runway.
- The JetBlue flight later departed for Boston at 1:48 p.m.
