28 employees fired from Google for sit-in protest over Israel

The employees took issue with Google’s $1.2 billion contract with Israel.

Google has fired 28 employees who participated in sit-ins at the company’s offices in California and New York to protest the tech giant’s $1.2 billion cloud computing contract with the Israeli government.

The protesters were demonstrating against Google’s provision of custom tools for the Israeli military.

Driving the news: Police arrested nine people during the sit-ins, and Google stated that a small number of employee protesters disrupted several locations.

  • Google said a small number of employees acted as protesters and disrupted a few of its locations, and after refusing to leave law enforcement removed them from the offices.
  • No Tech for Apartheid, the group behind the protests, said Google fired people who did not directly participate in the protests.
  • The group shared photos and videos on social media showing workers in Google offices holding placards and chanting slogans.
  • Google conducted individual investigations and terminated employment for 28 employees, with an assurance of continuing investigations and taking further action if necessary.
