Modesto police cracked down on illegal tobacco and cannabis sales taking place at smoke shops throughout the city.
The police department announced on Facebook on Thursday that it confiscated thousands of dollars in illegal products and also busted a gambling ring.
The big picture: Last Monday the police department worked with agents from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration to follow up on complaints about cannabis being sold at smoke shops.
- The department conducted compliance checks at West Side Smoke Shop, J’s Smoke Shop, Maze Smoke Shop, Smoking Jay’s and multiple Smoke City locations.
- Police arrested eight people and seized over 10,000 from illegal gambling activities.
- Officers also confiscated 10 gambling machines.
- Police found an illegal firearm during the investigation and confiscated thousands of dollars worth of illegal products such as flavored tobacco, cannabis, psilocybin mushrooms and other drug paraphernalia.
What they’re saying: “This crackdown serves as a reminder of the dangers and criminal activities associated with the illegal sale of such products,” the department said. “Not only does it pose risks to public health and safety, but it also impacts the quality of life for our residents. The Modesto Police Department remains committed to upholding the law and ensuring a safe and secure community for everyone.”
