Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R–GA) filed a motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday.
Her motion comes after Johnson supported a bipartisan $1.2 trillion federal funding bill which the House passed on Friday.
The big picture: Greene accuses Johnson of betraying the confidence of the House GOP Conference by supporting the spending bill.
- Johnson assumed office as Speaker in October after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed.
- Greene’s move does not require an immediate vote since it is not privileged like the proceedings that led to McCarthy’s ouster.
- There are procedural steps, like tabling or referring the resolution to a committee, that could prevent the motion from moving forward.
What they’re saying: “It’s more of a warning and a pink slip,” Greene told reporters. “There’s not a time limit on this. It doesn’t have to be forced.”
- She added, “But I’m not saying that it won’t happen in two weeks, or it won’t happen.”
- Johnson’s office told Fox news, “Speaker Johnson always listens to the concerns of members, but is focused on governing. He will continue to push conservative legislation that secures our border, strengthens our national defense, and demonstrates how we’ll grow our majority.”
