While State Sen. Melissa Hurtado (D–Bakersfield) conceded the Congressional District 22 race on Thursday, former Fresno City Councilman Chris Mathys will not do the same.
Mathys told The Sun that he still sees a path forward and will wait until every ballot is counted.
The big picture: As of the latest count updated Friday afternoon, Mathys was in third place in the race at 22.6 percent.
- He sits behind Rep. David Valadao (R–Hanford) at 34 percent and former Asm. Rudy Salas (D–Bakersfield) at 28.3 percent.
- Mathys is down to Salas by 1,743 votes and 3,482 votes behind Valadao.
- Hurtado is at 15.1 percent and conceded defeat on Thursday, endorsing Salas.
What they’re saying: Mathys told The Sun that he will wait for every vote to be counted before conceding.
- “There’s still a lot of votes to be counted and we’re thinking we can catch Rudy in Kern County,” Mathys said. “Will wait until the results come in and the election is certified before we make any further decisions. We would relish the opportunity to face David in the general election.”
