Calif. Republicans seek to protect IVF after Ala. ruling

Lawmakers have introduced a resolution to protect IVF in the wake of the Alabama Supreme Court decision.

Assembly Republicans are looking to protect in vitro fertilization (IVF) in California.

Republican lawmakers introduced a resolution on Friday to protect IVF in the wake of the recent ruling from the Alabama Supreme Court to consider frozen embryos as children under the state’s wrongful death law.

The big picture: The resolution, known as ACR 154, calls on the Alabama Legislature to overturn the state’s Supreme Court ruling.

  • It also declares that the California Legislature recognizes and protects access to IVF and encourages Congress to establish nationwide protections.
  • Assemblymembers Laurie Davies (R–Laguna Niguel), Josh Hoover (R–Folsom) and Greg Wallis (R–Bermuda Dunes) introduced the resolution.

What they’re saying: Davies said in a statement that access to IVF should never be blocked or placed in danger.

  • “I am calling on leaders from both political parties to do what’s right for women, families and doctors,” Davies said. “Now is not the time for partisan games. In-vitro fertilization treatment should be protected at all costs.”
  • Hoover added, “I am proud to joint author this resolution and stand in strong support of IVF services,” said Assemblyman Josh Hoover. “We must protect the rights of California women and ensure this option remains available to families across our state.”
