Visalia is asking for feedback from the community on safe routes to school in order to receive more grant funding.
The big picture: The city can submit applications to the Active Transportation Program with the state every two years to receive funding for bike and pedestrian path projects.
- Visalia plans to submit applications for four projects – the Washington Elementary Community Connectivity Project, the Highland Elementary Community Connectivity Project, the Goshen Visalia Corridor Improvement Project and elevating Santa Fe St. with traffic calming and urban beautification.
- Along with a lengthy application defining the project’s scope and how it meets the community’s needs, the city says community engagement and feedback is also critical for a successful application.
- In 2022, Visalia received $2.3 million for the Houston Connectivity Project and $795,000 for the Goshen Trail Reconstruction Project.
- The city is asking its residents to take a survey to provide feedback, which can be found here.
What they’re saying: “Visalia continues working to provide healthy and environmentally friendly transportation alternatives that are both safe and convenient for people of all ages and abilities,” said Mayor Brian Poochigian. “We’ve been successful in the past applying for and receiving grant funding, and we need citizen feedback to help us shape this next round of applications.”
