Prisoner dies in Delano prison, eight inmates suspected

The inmates allegedly used makeshift weapons to kill another prisoner.

Eight inmates at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano are suspected of attacking and killing fellow inmate Juan Trujillo, 50. 

The attack took place in a recreational yard and involved makeshift weapons. 

The big picture: The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is investigating Trujillo’s death as a homicide. 

  • Prison officials identified the suspected attackers as Zackary Holguin, Edwin Perez, Kevin Tello, Daniel Medivil, Javier Castaneda, Robert Toki, Kevin Barrera and Eric Castilleja.
  • Prison officers intervened and used chemical agents to stop the attack after the attackers refused to comply with orders.
  • Trujillo was treated for multiple stab wounds but was pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility.
  • Officials said two of the alleged attackers were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment and were in fair condition.
