Blythe prison riot injures eight officers

The riot started during a contraband investigation.

A riot occurred at Ironwood State Prison in Blythe involving around 200 inmates in the recreational yard which injured eight corrections officers and one prisoner. 

Driving the news: The violence started during a contraband investigation when an inmate headbutted a staff member, leading to the other inmates rushing towards the officers and attacking them with fists and rocks, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on Thursday. 

  • The officers responded by firing a rifle warning round and using chemical agents and non-lethal impact rounds to regain control.
  • Eight corrections officers and one inmate were treated at an outside hospital for their injuries, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.
  • Officials have identified 30 inmates has having direct involvement in the riot, while an investigation is ongoing. 
  • As a precaution, movement was restricted in yards and dayrooms at all prisons statewide for 24 hours while a routine threat assessment was conducted.
