Convicted murderer Scott Peterson is now being represented by the Los Angeles Innocence Project.
The group said on Thursday that it is representing Peterson, who was convicted of murdering his wife and unborn son in 2004.
Driving the news: The organization is investigating Peterson’s claim of actual innocence.
- Peterson was sentenced to death in 2005, but his death sentence was overturned in 2020 due to juror dismissals related to the death penalty.
- His convictions were upheld, and he was resentenced to life in prison without parole in 2021.
- Peterson’s attorneys filed a petition for a Writ of Habeas Corpus in April 2023, claiming violations of state and federal constitutional rights and presenting new evidence to support a claim of actual innocence.
- The Los Angeles Innocence Project has requested evidence and documents from the investigation to be turned over to Peterson’s attorneys.
- The organization is taking the case because Peterson no longer qualifies for a court-appointed attorney for habeas proceedings.
