West Hills Community College District considers renaming its colleges

The potential renaming is the result of months of meetings and a brand audit.

Two Central Valley community colleges could undergo name changes in the near future.

West Hills Community College District announced Tuesday that the board will consider name changes for West Hills College Coalinga and West Hills College Lemoore.

The big picture: The district received petitions that were signed by at least 15 qualified electors of the district that has proposed two name changes.

  • Under the proposal, West Hills College Coalinga would be renamed Coalinga College, and West Hills College Lemoore would be renamed Lemoore College.
  • That would match the naming system utilized by the State Center Community College District, which has Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College and Madera Community College.

What we’re watching: The district board will hold a hearing to consider the name changes on Jan. 19 at 9 a.m. at Harris Ranch.

  • Following the hearing, the board will vote to either approve or reject the changes.

What they’re saying: The district said in a statement that the hearing concludes a pivotal phase in the districts extensive rebranding initiative, which included a brand audit, engaging focus groups, distributing surveys and hosting multiple meetings at each college.

  • “The potential name change is a significant step in our commitment to aligning with the evolving needs and aspirations of our community,” said West Hills Community College District Chancellor Dr. Kristin Clark. “We have engaged in a thorough and inclusive process to ensure that the new name truly reflects the identity and values of our colleges.”
