Section of Interstate 10 in LA ahead of schedule to reopen

A fire on the 10 last week appeared to shut the highway down for about a month. Now officials are projecting a reopening far ahead of schedule.

Repairs to part of Interstate 10 in Los Angeles are progressing faster than expected.

Driving the news: California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that freeway lanes that were damaged by fire will reopen by Tuesday.

  • Initially, the freeway was scheduled to take three to five weeks to repair.
  • The fire, which burned about 100 support columns, was likely caused by arson and spread quickly over 8 acres.
  • No arrests have been made in connection with the arson, and investigators are determining if more than one person was involved.
  • The blaze led to the evacuation of 16 homeless individuals living in an encampment under the freeway, who were provided shelter.
  • The freeway closure affected approximately 300,000 daily commuters, prompting the city to encourage people to use alternative transportation options or work from home.

What they’re saying: “The bridge structure itself seems to be in better shape” than previously thought, Newsom said during a press conference. “One thing we can guarantee you is we will be open five lanes in both directions at the latest Tuesday of next week.”
