Long after pandemic concludes, Visalia launches COVID-19 rental, mortgage assistance program

Federal funding stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic will go toward those struggling to pay for housing.

Visalia residents financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic will now be able to receive assistance with their rent or mortgage payments.

The big picture: The city announced Tuesday that the COVID-19 Rental or Mortgage Assistance Program is now accepting applications.

  • Visalia households can apply to receive a maximum of $2000 to help with current and past due monthly rental or mortgage payments.
  • To be eligible, households must be at or below 80 percent area median income limits and be working households that reside within city limits.
  • Self-Help Enterprises is administering the program, and Visalia residents can apply for assistance on its website
  • Assistance will be provided on a first come, first serve basis until funding runs out or by Dec. 31.

What they’re saying: “We continue to work on the disbursement of these federal COVID-19 dollars to assist those who have experienced financial hardship from the pandemic,” said Margie Perez, City of Visalia Housing Specialist. “We encourage Visalia households who meet the program income limits to apply now.”
