Fresno’s cops weigh-in on city’s lone open City Council seat. Here’s who they’re backing.

Fresno’s police officers made their choice known early as the race to replace Garry Bredefeld intensifies ahead of March 2024.

Roger Bonakdar has earned the support of the the Fresno Police Officers’ Association in his bid for Fresno City Council.

Bonakdar, who is running to replace outgoing councilman Garry Bredefeld in District 6, adds the major endorsement to his high fundraising totals which have him far ahead of the competition to this point.

Driving the news: The FPOA formally endorsed Bonakdar last Tuesday, with union president Brandon Wiemiller saying Bonakdar has leadership abilities that will serve the city well.

  • Bonakdar, a local attorney and small businessman, raised $218,217.10 in the first half of 2022.
  • His opponents, Justin St. George and Nickolas Richardson, brought in $7,320 and $8,667, respectively.

What they’re saying: Along with his leadership skills, Wiemiller praised Bonakdar for running for the right reasons.

  • “Roger cares about the people of this community and wants to use his skills to improve the lives of all who live here,” Wiemiller said. “He understands that safety is the cornerstone of any thriving community, and is committed to providing that security to our citizens.”
  • Bonakdar said he is honored to be supported by Fresno’s police officers.
  • “Their job is critical to the success of our city,” Bonakdar said. “A safe Fresno is a thriving Fresno. I’m proud to support a safer Fresno for all and look forward to working with FPOA to make our city the safest in the Valley.”
