The California Capitol Building was evacuated Thursday morning on word of a “credible threat,” Capitol officials announced to lawmakers and staff.
The decision, made by the California Highway Patrol, forced members of the State Senate to reconvene their Thursday session off-site.

What they’re saying: “The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has notified the Senate of a threat they consider to be credible involving the Capitol,” Senate Secretary Erika Contreras wrote in an email to lawmakers and staff. “The CHP and security partners are present in higher numbers in the Capitol area, and are alert of the situation.”
- Staff were advised to either remain in place in their offices or stay home if they had not yet made it to the Capitol complex.
