The race to replace longtime California Senator Dianne Feinstein is heading to the Central Valley.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D–Burbank) will visit Fresno on Tuesday for a meet and greet.
Driving the news: Schiff is one of a few candidates vying to replace Feinstein when her term ends, joining Rep. Katie Porter (D–Irvine) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D–Oakland) as the top Democrats.
- Feinstein, 89, has served in the Senate since 1992 and is the longest serving female Senator in history.
- Schiff, 62, has served in Congress since 2001 and was recently booted from the House Intelligence Committee – the committee that he used to chair – by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
The big picture: Schiff’s campaign kickoff in Fresno will be held at the Fresno County Democratic Party headquarters in downtown Fresno from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- The meet and greet will be hosted by the Fresno County Young Democrats and will offer voters the opportunity to directly ask Schiff questions about his candidacy.
- Schiff will be the first Senate candidate to visit Fresno ahead of the election which is still 21 months away.
What they’re saying: In the meet and greet announcement, Schiff’s campaign said the Congressman is a longtime defender of democracy, and he is taking his fight to the Senate because “GOP leaders care more about power than anything else.”
- When Feinstein announced her upcoming retirement, Schiff released a statement saying he is deeply grateful for her friendship and mentorship.
- “All of California is indebted to Dianne for her decades of distinguished service,” Schiff said.
