Despite harshest gun laws in U.S., Calif. under seige of mass shootings

In a span of more than a week, California – home to the strictest gun laws in America – has been rocked by three mass shootings.

With another mass shooting taking place in Monterey Park in Southern California, many questions are left unanswered as to how future incidents could be prevented with such strict gun laws already being imposed.

Driving the news: California is mourning the loss of 11 victims today in a mass shooting which took place in Monterey Park while injuring 9 other individuals. The tragedy was followed with another mass shooting in Half Moon Bay on Monday night leaving 7 dead and 1 injured.

  • Investigators identified 72-year-old Huu Can Tran as the shooter in Monterey Park, who has a criminal record for illegally owning a firearm, with hundreds of rounds of ammunition and gun silencers being manufactured at his home.
  • 69-year-old Chunli Zhao of Pescadero was the assailant in Monday night’s mass shooting in Half Moon Bay, law enforcement announced after his arrest following the shooting of farmworkers at Mountain Mushroom Farm.
  • California lawmakers passed into law a package of bills which restricts which guns can be purchased and gave more accountability to gun dealers.

Hot off the press: While California suffers the stream of mass shootings this past weekend, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reinforced that Los Angeles is still reputable for their “strict gun laws.” Meanwhile Governor Gavin Newsom accused the Republican Party of their gun industry “support” before any facts had been uncovered.

  • “California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country but yet, look at what we just had today,” Luna said. “Let’s look across this nation and see what works and what doesn’t. I can tell you this, the status quo is not working.”
  • Gavin Newsom tweeted on Monday, “Every country struggles with mental illness. But the USA has a gun homicide rate 26 TIMES HIGHER than our peers. The difference is how the @GOP have bowed down to the gun industry. The difference is how easy it is to access to guns and high capacity magazines in our country.”
