Calif. lawmakers reject GOP push to cut gas prices by 50 cents per gallon

With the chance to cut California’s gas tax by 51 cents per gallon, more than half of Valley lawmakers didn’t show up to vote.

Facing historic high gas prices, California lawmakers rejected a parliamentary maneuver to expedite consideration of a bill to suspend the state’s highest-in-the-nation fuel tax.

By an 18-39 vote, members of the California State Assembly rejected a push by Assembly GOP Leader James Gallagher (R–Yuba City) and Asm. Kevin Kiley (R–Rocklin) to consider Assembly Bill 1638.

Under the bill, California’s imposition of the motor vehicle fuel tax would be suspended for a six month window.

The bill would transfer funds from the state’s General Fund to make up for the shortfall in gas tax revenues to pay for highway improvements.
