California billionaire hedge funder-turned-presidential contender Tom Steyer is launching his home state campaign on Monday in a fairly unusual place: Fresno.
The San Francisco resident, who jumped into the Presidential contest in July, is the second contender to open a campaign office in the state’s fifth largest city.
Steyer and his wife, Kat, are expected to attend the office opening on Monday evening located near Bullard and First avenues in northeast Fresno.
His appearance would make him the fourth Democratic contender to visit Fresno during the campaign, following former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
In the last decade, Steyer served as an ever-growing patron of Democratic causes. In 2013, he started NextGen America, a progressive political action nonprofit.
Less than a year after Donald Trump was elected to the Presidency, Steyer launched Need to Impeach, a campaign pushing to impeach Trump.
Contested territory
Fresno is slowly becoming hot real estate for Presidential wannabes seeking the top spot on the Democratic ticket.
In early November, Sanders opened up his campaign office, located in downtown Fresno.
Democratic sources told The Sun that fellow Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s team is also currently seeking office space for a local outpost in the March 3 primary.
