Sanders returns Fresno on Friday for Green New Deal rally

Following a cancelled appearance due to heart attack, Sen. Bernie Sanders returns to Fresno for a rally with supporters this week, his campaign announced.

Presidential contender Sen. Bernie Sanders (D–Vermont) is set to make his return to Fresno for a rally with supporters this week, his campaign announced.

Sanders was scheduled to make his first Valley appearances of the 2020 election cycle – town halls in Fresno and Bakersfield – at the beginning of October before being sidelined due to a heart attack.

The Vermonter’s campaign is billing his appearance on Friday, Nov. 15, as a “Green New Deal Rally.” The rally will be held on the Veterans Peace Memorial Lawn at Fresno City College with the program to begin at 6 p.m.

The campaign has opened RSVPs for the Friday evening rally.

Between Sanders’ cancelled appearance in October and his scheduled rally on Friday, his camp opened an outpost in downtown Fresno ahead of the March 3 primary.

Sanders last visited the San Joaquin Valley ahead of California’s presidential primary in May 2016 with rallies in Visalia and Fresno.

Four years later, he is the third presidential contender to visit the region during the election cycle.

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro visited Fresno as part of a Fresno County Democratic Party fundraiser in May.

Castro was followed in June by South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who participated in an MSNBC-hosted town hall at Fresno State.
