The San Diego City Council has approved a $30 million settlement for the family of Kanoa Wilson, a 16-year-old Black teen fatally shot by police.
The settlement amount surpasses the $27 million paid by Minneapolis to George Floyd’s family after his murder in 2020.
Driving the news: The incident occurred on January 28, when surveillance and body camera footage showed Wilson running away from gunfire at a downtown train station.
- As Wilson exited the station, he encountered Officer Daniel Gold, who allegedly fired two shots at Wilson “instantly, without any warning,” striking him in the upper body.
- The lawsuit brought by Wilson’s family accused the officer and city of excessive force and wrongful death.
