Kaweah Health has found its next CEO to succeed Gary Herbst, who plans to retire.
The Kaweah Health Board of Directors announced Monday that Marc Mertz will be the hospital’s next CEO.
Flashback: Herbst announced over the summer that he will retire after 34 years with Kaweah Health, including the last eight as the healthcare provider’s chief executive.
The big picture: Mertz is another inside hire for Kaweah Health.
- He joined the hospital in 2018 and is currently serving as the Chief Strategy Officer.
- Before joining Kaweah Health, Mertz served as the vice preident and physician services practice leader at GE Healthcare in Southern California.
- Mertz also has held positions as president of Health Check Incorporated in Mexico Beach, Florida, and vice president of The Horizon Group in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Driving the news: Kaweah Health said the board conducted a nationwide search that attracted dozens of highly qualified candidates.
- Mertz was selected among a pool of finalists who participated in interviews with the board, medical staff, the executive team and community members.
What we’re watching: Mertz will take over as Kaweah Health’s new CEO on Dec. 22.
What they’re saying: “We are excited for Marc to step into the position of CEO, bringing not only more than 20 years of experience outside our organization, but also a deep knowledge and understanding of Kaweah Health and our unique challenges,” said board president Mike Olmos in a statement. “Marc is the right person to guide Kaweah Health through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
- Mertz said he is honored to have the confidence of the board to be the new CEO.
- “During my time here, I have witnessed firsthand the fantastic care we provide to our patients,” Mertz said. “I am proud of our legacy and accomplishments, and I look forward to working with our employees and our medical staff to reach new levels of high-quality, compassionate care for our community.”
