Another candidate has entered the race for Fresno City Council District 3 in the hopes of succeeding Councilman Miguel Arias.
Former West Park Elementary School District Trustee Fernando Alvarez launched a campaign for District 3 over the weekend.
The big picture: Alvarez is a small business owner who also worked as the Government Affairs Specialist at the Fresno Chamber of Commerce.
- He was born and raised in southwest Fresno as the son of immigrants from Mexico.
- Along with his work to strengthen the local economy, Alvarez has positioned himself as a public safety advocate.
- Alvarez has the support of former Fresno County Supervisor Henry Perea and Fresno Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Scott Miller.
What they’re saying: “Our district has too often been ignored,” Alvarez said. “We need a leader who is rooted in this community, who understands the struggles firsthand, and who will fight every day to deliver results. This seat belongs to the working families of District 3 – not to career politicians looking to parachute in for their next opportunity.”
- Perea said Alvarez represents the future of leadership in Fresno.
- “He has the energy, the vision, and most importantly, the deep connection to our community to make a real difference for District 3.”
- Miller added, “The Fresno Chamber of Commerce is proud to endorse Fernando Alvarez for Fresno City Council District 3. Fernando understands the challenges businesses face and the importance of investing in strong neighborhoods through opportunity and education. His experience and vision make him the right choice to advocate for policies that grow small businesses, expand economic opportunity, and ensure long-term success for our community.”
State of the race: Alvarez joins Asm. Joaquin Arambula (D–Fresno) and Fresno Unified Trustee Keshia Thomas in the race.
- Arambula reported having $5,850 in his city council campaign account for the first half of the year, as well as over $3,000 in his Assembly campaign account.
- Thomas reported having over $16,700 on hand in her city council account at the midway point of the year.
- Alvarez filed to run after the reporting deadline.
- District 3 covers southwest Fresno, including downtown and the Tower District.
