Grapevine reopens after Hughes Fire shutters I-5. Firefighters stave off disaster in Castaic.

A new blaze along I-5’s Ridge Route has shut down the roadway north of Castaic, with southbound traffic from the Central Valley to southern California halted and diverted to alternative routes.

Interstate 5 from Grapevine Road near Fort Tejon to Highway 126, just north of Castaic was closed due to the ignition of a new, dangerous wildfire, dubbed the Hughes Fire.

By Wednesday evening, the roadways were reopened after firefighters managed to push back the blaze away from the roadway.

What you need to know: All northbound I-5 lanes were closed throughout Wednesday just north of Highway 126 near Castaic Junction, the CHP announced on Wednesday.

  • Southbound I-5 lanes are closed at the foot of the Grapevine due to on-going traffic to fight the blaze in the foothills.
  • Traffic was forced to detour at Highway 126 along with an eastern bypass on Highway 14 toward Palmdale and Lancaster.
