U.S. Olympic Committee bars trans athletes from women’s competitions

The committee is following the executive order from President Donald Trump to protect women’s sports.

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee has quietly revised its rules, now disallowing transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports in adherence to President Trump’s executive order.

The big picture: The shift in policy extends beyond the Olympic arena, encompassing national governing bodies of sports federations in the U.S., thereby affecting a wide range of sports events for athletes of all ages, from youth to masters’ competitions, and triggering a ripple effect within the Olympic movement.

  • The committee’s affirmation of compliance with federal expectations under Executive Order 14201 has been marked by discussions with federal officials, and their decision to collaborate with national governing bodies to enact the new policy, which also seeks alignment with the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee.
