Trump signs orders on gender, DEI programs

Trump declared that there are only two genders and also prohibited government DEI programs.

President Donald Trump signed executive orders aimed at rolling back protections for transgender individuals and ending Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs within the federal government.

These actions align with Trump’s campaign promises and signal significant shifts in federal policy regarding gender and civil rights.

The big picture: The orders emphasize defining gender as immutable and only recognizing two sexes: male and female, with the distinction based on the presence of eggs or sperm, rather than chromosomes. The change intends to prevent what is referred to as “gender extremism,” particularly in the protection of women.

  • The decision to segregate federal prisons, migrant shelters, and facilities for rape victims based on sex as defined by the order will impact the treatment of transgender individuals within these institutions, restricting access to services like transition treatments.
  • Trump’s executive orders aim to block the enforcement of workplace and government facility requirements regarding the usage of pronouns aligned with a person’s gender identity, citing First Amendment violations.

Go deeper: The executive actions also revoke protections for transgender military personnel initiated by former President Joe Biden, affecting an estimated 9,000 to 14,000 transgender troops.

  • The decision to end DEI programs within federal agencies reflects a longstanding conservative critique of such initiatives as biased and unconstitutional.
