Trump proposes 100% tariff on foreign movies

The tariff would save Hollywood, according to Trump, keeping the film industry based in the U.S.

President Donald Trump announced a proposed 100% tariff on all foreign movies imported into the U.S., alleging that other countries are trying to lure American filmmakers and studios away.

He labeled this trend as a national security threat, pointing out the decline of the movie industry in America.

The big picture: The White House clarified that the decision on foreign film tariffs is still pending, indicating that options are being explored to fulfill Trump’s directive of safeguarding national and economic security while aiming to revitalize Hollywood.

  • In his remarks to reporters, Trump indirectly blamed California Gov. Gavin Newsom for the state of the movie industry, accusing him of incompetence for allowing Hollywood’s decline and suggesting that other nations have taken advantage of the situation by acquiring the U.S. movie industry.
