Trump fires, Milley, three other appointees

Milley, who was given a preemptive pardon from President Joe Biden, served in Iran during Trump’s first term.

President Donald Trump announced the firing of four high-profile presidential appointees just after midnight on Tuesday.

The fired appointees include retired Gen. Mark Milley, former special envoy for Iran Brian Hook, celebrity chef and humanitarian José Andrés, and Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta.

The big picture: Trump posted on Truth Social, stating that his Presidential Personnel Office is actively in the process of identifying and removing over a thousand Presidential Appointees from the previous administration who are not aligned with his vision to “Make America Great Again.”

  • Trump mentioned that there are many more dismissals to come, indicating that these four individuals are just the beginning. He ended his post with the phrase “YOU’RE FIRED!”

Driving the news: Milley, the former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had been given a preemptive pardon by former President Joe Biden in the 11th hour of his presidency. Trump and Milley have had a turbulent relationship, with Trump at times suggesting that Milley should be court-martialed and executed.

  • Hook, who served as a special envoy for Iran under former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, was known for his hawkish stance on Iran and his support for the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration.
  • Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta, had decided against running for a second term and had served as a senior adviser on Biden’s re-election campaign.
  • Andrés, the founder of World Central Kitchen, has questioned Trump’s deportation plans and seems to be considering a future in politics himself.
