Trump administration subpoenas Harvard over international student allegations

The Department of Homeland Security issues a subpoena demanding records from Harvard amidst accusations of international student misconduct and non-compliance with immigration laws.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) subpoenaed Harvard University for “relevant information” related to alleged misconduct of international students.

The Trump administration accused Harvard of allowing international students to abuse visa privileges and advocate for violence and terrorism on campus.

The big picture: The subpoena issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is requesting all records and communications dating back to January 1, 2020, relevant to the school’s compliance with immigration laws and disciplinary actions against immigrant students.

Driving the news: Previously, the Trump administration had demanded access to internal communications, memos, and video footage of international students at anti-Israel protests. Harvard shared documents, but the administration deemed the information inadequate.

  • As a result, President Donald Trump prohibited incoming international students from studying at Harvard and revoked Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program status.
  • Harvard sued the Trump administration, and a federal judge granted the university preliminary injunctions blocking the administration’s actions.
