Trump administration restricts DEI language in government

Words such as “trans” and “assigned female at birth” are being removed from all government use.

The Trump administration is reportedly restricting the use of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) terms within the federal government, as revealed by documents obtained by The New York Times.

The big picture: The administration is instructing federal agencies to avoid using “woke” language and has listed nearly 200 terms deemed unacceptable, including words related to sexual ideology like “trans,” “assigned female at birth” and “pregnant person,” as well as terms associated with race such as “BIPOC,” “Latinx,” and “racial diversity.”

  • Some banned terms are being removed from government websites, and materials containing certain words, like school curricula, are being eliminated.
  • Specific examples of this censorship include the removal of the word “diverse” from the Federal Aviation Administration’s job site and the deletion of a paragraph discussing the “climate crisis” from the State Department’s website.

Driving the news: President Donald Trump, in an executive order signed on his first day in office, aimed to end what he perceived as federal censorship. He argued against the Biden administration’s online censorship efforts and prohibited federal officers from infringing on the free speech of American citizens.

  • Trump has made statements indicating his intention to halt DEI programs and declared during a recent address to Congress that the United States will no longer be “woke.”
