Senate confirms Chris Wright as Energy Secretary

Eight Democrats joined with Republicans to confirm Wright’s position in the Trump administration.

The Senate has confirmed Chris Wright, the CEO of Liberty Energy, as the Energy Secretary with a 59-38 vote.

Wright is known for his advocacy of increasing fossil fuel production to alleviate global poverty and has promised to assist President Donald Trump in achieving energy security and prosperity.

Driving the news: Trump’s energy policy revolves around expanding fossil fuel production, including oil, natural gas, and coal, while dismissing what he regards as the “green new scam” proposed by Democrats.

  • This aligns with Wright’s dedication to implementing Trump’s ambitious energy agenda encompassing various energy sources, such as nuclear, wind, solar, and geothermal power, along with traditional fossil fuels.

The big picture: While some Democratic senators supported Wright’s confirmation, like Colorado’s John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet, not all were in favor. Criticism from environmental groups, such as Evergreen Action’s Lena Moffitt, points to concerns about empowering Big Oil interests and hindering progress towards clean energy development.

  • Wright is a successful entrepreneur in the energy sector, with a focus on shale gas production technologies like hydraulic fracturing.
  • As part of the National Energy Council chaired by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Wright will play a crucial role in formulating energy policies aimed at boosting domestic production and streamlining energy-related processes.
  • The council’s mission emphasizes reducing regulatory hurdles and enhancing energy production—a significant departure from the climate-focused policies pursued by the previous administration.
