Rep. Mark Green (R–TN) announced his resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives to pursue an opportunity in the private sector after the House votes anew on President Donald Trump’s comprehensive tax and spending bill.
The big picture: Green, who chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security, announced his decision to resign in a statement, indicating that he will step down from Congress upon the House’s upcoming vote on the reconciliation package.
- The Republican majority in the House will decrease to 219-212, limiting Speaker Mike Johnson’s margin to lose only three votes for legislation to pass.
- Green, 60 and an army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been representing Tennessee’s 7th District in Congress since his election in 2018.
What he’s saying: “Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up,” Green said in a statement. “As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package.”
