Canned tuna recalled at Costco, other retailers

A number of brands have been recalled due to a risk of Botulism.

Several brands of canned tuna, including Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s, have been recalled from stores like Trader Joe’s, Costco, and H-E-B due to a botulism risk.

The big picture: The recall was issued by Tri-Union Seafoods of El Segundo, because of a manufacturing defect in the ‘easy open’ cans that could result in leakage or contamination with botulism-causing bacteria.

  • The affected products have best-by dates in 2027 and 2028, and were also sold at Harris Teeter, Publix, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and some independent stores in various states.
  • The company stated that no illnesses have been reported so far but advised consumers not to consume the recalled tuna even if it appears normal. Instead, they should return it for a full refund, throw it away, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods.

Why it matters: Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by a toxin from bacteria attacking the body’s nerves, leading to symptoms like difficulty breathing, paralysis, and potentially death.
