The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced it will not publish the employment report for October 2025 because the recent government shutdown prevented data collection for the household survey during that month.
October’s employment data will be combined with November’s report, meaning the October unemployment rate will never be known.
What they’re saying: “Establishment survey data from the Current Employment Statistics survey for October 2025 will be published with the November 2025 data,” the BLS said.
- “Household survey data from the Current Population Survey could not be collected for the October 2025 reference period due to a lapse in appropriations. The household survey data is not able to be retroactively collected.”
What we’re watching: The BLS plans to publish September’s employment report on Thursday, which had also been delayed by the 43-day government shutdown.
- The combined November report is scheduled for release on December 16, after the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting on December 9-10.
