Amazon to shut down Freevee streaming service

Amazon-owned free streaming service Freevee is set to close down its app in August, with users advised to shift to Prime Video for continued content access.

Freevee, rebranded from IMDb Freedive in 2019, will no longer be available starting in August.

Content will be incorporated into Amazon Prime Video.

The big picture: Amazon assures that Prime members will retain access to a diverse range of content, with offerings from Amazon, MGM Studios, and multiple licensed movies and series.

  • The decision to discontinue Freevee aligns with Amazon’s strategy to streamline the viewing experience for customers on its platform.
  • Users who prefer ad-supported content previously available on Freevee are urged to make the transition to Prime Video to continue enjoying their favorite shows.
  • Original programs from Freevee, including popular series like Bosch Legacy and Jury Duty, will still be accessible to Amazon Prime Video users.
  • Freevee’s rebranding to Amazon Freevee in 2022 marked a shift in the company’s advertising-supported streaming service model.

The backstory: The streaming service had launched as IMDb Freedive but later evolved into Amazon Freevee, offering a mix of original series, select Prime content, and ad-supported programming.

What we’re watching: Users are advised to download the Prime Video app and login with their Amazon account to seamlessly transition from Freevee to Prime Video.
