New Fresno State Head Football Coach Matt Entz announced Josh Davis as the program’s next offensive coordinator.
Entz also revealed that Special Teams Coordinator John Baxter has been retained, continuing his second stint with the team.
The big picture: Davis comes to Fresno from the University of South Dakota, where he was the offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.
- The Yotes made the FCS playoff semifinals for the first time in program history this year with Davis running the offense.
- Before South Dakota, Davis was the pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach for South Dakota State. He also spent time at Northwestern College, where he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
- Davis played wide receiver at South Dakota State from 2002 to 2005.
Go deeper: Davis powered a strong running game at South Dakota, which featured the top two running backs in the Missouri Valley Conference.
- Running backs Travis Tehis and Charles Pierre Jr. led the conference in rushing yards per game at 90.2 and 88.9, respectively. The duo also led the conference in rushing touchdowns at 19 and 16, respectively.
- Overall, South Dakota had the fifth-best offense in the FCS with 419.3 yards per game. South Dakota was also tied for sixth in the country with 35.8 points per game.
Baxter stays: When Entz was hired on, he said in his opening press conference that he was open to bringing back some members of the previous coaching staff.
- Baxter is a familiar face to Fresno State, having coached for Pat Hill from 1997 to 2001 and returning under Jeff Tedford in 2022.
