Clovis North’s Madsen makes 102-year history, wins back-to-back double gold in CIF track championship

The BYU linebacker commit achieved something not done since the 1920s at the CIF’s State Track and Fields Championship.

McKay Madsen, a graduating senior at Clovis North High School, made history at the Clovis-based CIF State Track & Field Championships by clinching back-to-back state titles in both the discus and shot put events, achieving a feat not seen since 1922.

Madsen’s exceptional performance mirrored Clarence Houser of Oxnard High School, who accomplished a similar double-gold victory over 100 years ago.

In the events: In discus, Madsen threw an impressive 210 feet, 8 inches, coming just shy of the state meet record by three feet and surpassing the second-place finisher by over 24 feet.

  • In shot put, Madsen dominated with a throw of 69 feet, 11 inches, winning by a substantial, nine-foot margin.

What he’s saying: Madsen expressed his relentless dedication to achieving these victories, declaring, “Since I woke up last year after winning state, there hasn’t been a single day where I haven’t thought about it again. It’s like literally an obsession.”

The big picture: Madsen, a commit to BYU football, is set to embark on a two-year church mission in Argentina before joining the Cougars in Provo.
