Diamond ‘Dogs capture second-straight Mountain West title, NCAA tournament bid

Ryan Overland’s Bulldogs booked their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning back-to-back conference crowns.

The Fresno State Diamond ‘Dogs secured their second consecutive Mountain West baseball tournament win on Saturday.

The Bulldogs clinched the championship with a dominant 9-1 victory over San Jose State.

Driving the victory: Six different Bulldogs contributed to the win, with Bobby Blandford and Lee Trevino notching 2-out RBI hits in the 1st inning, followed by Eddie Saldivar’s solo home run in the 3rd inning, extending the lead to 3-0.

  • Griffen Sotomayor added a pair of RBI singles, and Triston “Murf” Gray sealed the victory with a 3-run home run.
  • On Friday night, Gray’s bases-clearing double propelled Fresno State to a 12-7 victory over No. 1 seed Nevada in the 14th inning, finishing the game with 5 RBI’s.
  • Unfortunately, the celebration was marred by a serious lower-leg injury suffered by center fielder Sky Collins while sliding into second base.
  • His former Buchanan High teammate Cooper Bergman stepped up to pitch the final two innings, helping the Bulldogs (31-27) secure the championship.

The big picture: In head coach Ryan Overland’s two official seasons, he has successfully led Fresno State to back-to-back Mountain West titles.

  • Gray was named the Mountain West Tournament MVP, and starting pitcher Bryce Armstrong, Lee Trevino, and Sky Collins were selected for the All-Tournament team.

What’s next: The Diamond ‘Dogs will find out their NCAA Regional site on Monday morning at 9 a.m. PT.
